Wife and I went to the mountains this weekend...

It was really nice to get away from the heat for a couple of days.  I think the change of weather in the summer is the only real appeal the mountains have for me.  I guess some of the views are nice, but I like the views at the coast better I think.  The mountains are obviously very popular judging by the crowds up in the Highlands/Franklin area this weekend.  I know some people really love the mountains and I guess it is a good thing everybody doesn't love the same thing.  I've always heard the thing about being a mountain person or beach person and I'm definitely a beach person.

I’ve been watching this show about Blue Ridge and its million dollar mansions. While nice and great views…I’d rather have a place near the water.

We stayed in palmetto dunes this past weekend and enjoyed it 3 minute walk to the golf course bar plenty to do. Played Haig point and harbour town good times

Yeah, we have a 13 yr old cat to deal with.  Luckily, our daughter and SIL live pretty close and can tend to him while we're gone.  If they can't, neighbor has a HS age daughter I can pay to serve him.  Cats don't need a lot of care, but he does need to be let in and out since his food is inside and we don't have a litter box.

Our pool feels like a bathtub now. We need some rain to cool it down.

The vast majority of my life has been spent living on, or near salt water. I'm a mountain person.

Back when we had a pool, I used to keep a ton of 1 gallon milk jugs filled with frozen water. Didn't make a huge difference, but it did help a little.

I like the mountains in the fall. Spent last week on Jekyll with the GF and some of her family from Ohio. Her cousins BF claimed to be a scratch golfer, so I invited him to play at Jekyll Club with me. Let’s just say Yankees lie. Now she wants to invite them to HH when we go Labor Day week. Told her NO.

I spent close to 30 years of my life living near beaches. One place was a half mile walk. All the hurricanes, tropical storms, etc turned me off.

Try a mountain lake - best of both worlds. Bought a place on Chatuge Lake on the NC side five years ago. Still working out how to get up there full time. This has been the worst summer with the drought and the TVA keeping it 3-4 feet below full pool. Not the heat relief of Highlands area since we're only at 1925 ft lake level, but plenty of big mountains close by in both GA and NC.

Bloody Point is closed, everything about it is closed, restaurant, water taxi, etc..  I think it closed a few years ago, like 2021 or so.  Melrose is closed too and has been for a long time.  Both courses are pretty much abandoned and overgrown.  The last time I was down there, the fairways looked like Bermuda grass pastures and the greens were covered in weeds that were about 6 feet tall.  Some of the holes at Melrose looked like they were being mowed with a tractor, probably by the HOA for the people who have homes on the golf course.  Bloody Point was completely overgrown.

There is no telling how many millions, tens of millions probably, that have been lost by people trying to develop property on Daufuskie.  Having no road access makes it nearly impossible to have the numbers of visitors necessary for a resort or golf course to make it.  The inn/hotel at Melrose was incredibly nice.  I went to a wedding there that was one of the nicest weddings I've ever been to.  It is now totally abandoned and about half the windows are blown out.  It is full of racoons and other wildlife.  The two greens in front of the inn that were built overlooking the ocean have collapsed into the water along with the gazebo in front of the inn.  It is really creepy to visit the place.  The lack of regular ferry service, the ferry runs four times a day from 7:00 am until 5:30 pm, and the difficulty of getting around the island when you arrive makes generating large numbers of vacationers or tourists in general almost impossible. 

Haig survives because it is private and very high end.  I think the club initiation is $65,000 and dues are around $25,000 a year and the POA dues are probably another $10,000 a year and they are not shy about assessments of members if there is a shortfall.  You must join if you are a property owner.  The homes at Haig are probably some of the nicest homes I have ever seen.  The members/owners there are generally seriously wealthy.  Haig has its own ferry which runs once an hour from around 6:30 am until around midnight.  They also run a water taxi that operates 24 hrs a day.  If you have the money and the time/flexibility (a trip to the grocery store on HHI takes about 4 hours total) Haig is a nice place.

I like riding over to Daufuskie when I'm at HHI, but I have my own boat so I can come and go when I want to.  The restaurant/bar at Freeport Marina is a very popular spot as a day trip from Savannah, HHI, Bluffton and Beaufort.

Be glad you didn't buy a place over there.  My buddy had a small place in Haig for a while and lost a couple hundred thousand when he sold it.  Houses on Daufuskie take ages to sell.  I like the place but I wouldn't want to own anything there.  There are just too many challenges.  Everything has to come on a boat, appliances, furniture, home repair supplies, lawn equipment, any sort of service people to work on HVAC, plumbing, etc..  The cost of everything on that island is a minimum 2x what it is on HHI.

Building a bridge would be a monumental engineering feat.  The nearest road is quite a few miles away and would have to cross miles of marsh and a number of rivers and creeks.  There are a number of private ferry/water taxis that will take you whenever you want to go, but they are pretty pricey, about $30-40 per person and extra for packages or cargo each way.

Bloody Point closed in 2008 and reopened in 2013 for a little while but it couldn't last.  It closed for good in 2021.  They had a water taxi from the Westin in Savannah to Bloody Point but they still couldn't generate the numbers they needed.  I guess operating a golf course seasonally wouldn't really work, you have to care for the course year round so there wouldn't be a lot of savings.  The cost to operate a golf course on an island, having to bring employees, equipment, fuel, food, drinks, everything, by boat every day would astronomical.
