I put the 22KW natural gas generator in ~7 years ago and it has never been used except for the 5 minute weekly run tests. Well, the electricity here has been out for 18 hours due to Florida Power and Light equipment failure. FPL estimates the power will be restored by 9:30 PM tonight. However, I have zero confidence in their estimates as earlier today they estimated restoration by 7:30 AM, 11 AM, 2:45 PM, 5 PM, and 8 PM. Evidently they have a problem with the underground main distribution line. The generator has worked continuously and has kept everything in the house operating as it should for the past 18 hours.

Does it have auto "low oil" shutoff? If not, might check your oil. Don't ask me how I know........ HINT: We were out of power for 6 days with Helene!!! Good luck.

The peace of mind and the savings in unspoiled food in freezer and fridge make a Generac or other permanently installed generator a really nice investment.

The generator has auto shut off for overheating, low oil pressure, and a host of other problems. Power was finally restored at 6:22 AM today, an outage of ~ 31 hours.

I have a portable 5KW generator and a suicide cord. I have had to use it a couple of times in the last few years, the most was after Helene, when power was out for 12 days. I can run about half of my house on it, so I can keep frozen stuff frozen and have lights, fans and can run one window A/C unit so I have at least one cool room. My biggest challenge is gasoline. It takes about 10 gallons a day if it is run continuously. I learned after Helene to run it for 6 or so hours to make sure everything was frozen solid and then shut it off for 6 or 8 hours. I was able to stretch my gasoline supplies (which were difficult to get because gas stations didn't have power either) to where 10 gallons would last me around 48 hours. It isn't ideal, but it is tolerable.
I would like a whole house generator system but the cost is really too much considering how infrequently we lose power for an extended period. My next generator purchase will probably be a dual fuel 8KW that I can connect to the natural gas line. Not having to worry about getting gasoline would be nice. 8KW will be large enough to run my central A/C and pretty much everything else except the oven and pool pump if the central A/C is running. I have gas hot water, heat and cooktop and a Recteq grill, so I won't miss the oven in the kitchen.

I assume you shut off the main breaker…I’m thinking either a dryer plug or a dedicated plug somewhere..

good deal. i'm glad you have power again. glad it didn't happen down here in Mel Beach. My neighbor installed a Generac a few years ago. We haven't had a bad storm (cane) since. [knocks on wood]

Shut off main, shut off Central A/C and pool pump breaker, plug into an outlet in my carport that is on a 20 amp breaker. The cord is heavy duty so I don't have an issue with overloading the cord and I'm running it from the 20 amp outlet on the generator so it would trip before it would overload the circuit.
If/when I get the 8KW, I will have a dedicated plug installed.
