Story by Jonathan Riniti

American golf legend Mark Calcavecchia was ejected from The Masters after violating one of the tournament’s strictest rules: the ban on mobile phones. According to a U.S.-based reporter, the incident took place ahead of the 2026 edition and quickly drew attention across the golf world.

Calcavecchia, winner of The Open Championship in 1989, was attending the event at the Augusta National Golf Club as an honorary invitee, a privilege granted to past major champions. Over his career, he competed in the Masters 18 times, with his best finish coming in 1988 when he placed second.

The Augusta National is renowned for its strict code of conduct, designed to preserve the tradition and prestige of the tournament. Among its rules are a specific dress code, a ban on running on the grounds, and the absence of visible branding or sponsorships.

One of the most notable regulations is the complete ban on electronic devices. Spectators—referred to as “patrons”—must leave their phones, tablets, and laptops outside the venue. Instead, the club provides old-fashioned telephones placed around the course to maintain its classic atmosphere.

Calcavecchia reportedly breached this rule, leading to his immediate removal by security.

Manhandling an older person for any reason is potentially actionable behavior. I have won cases where a store employee took hold of kids, older women, and invalids for suspicious behavior with little or no defensible reason--and often no clear evidence.

I will take this case and win Mark a big payday. Yeah, he broke their rule, he made a mistake, but hands-on is a no-no unless you are a LEO.
