I hiked the AT through the Smokies from Davenport Gap to Fontana Dam one summer in High School. There were 36 of us in the big group, but we broke into small groups of three to six according to the speed we hiked and met at the next trail shelter each evening. Took us 12 days to hike about 100 miles with 30 kids from 9th grade to 12 grade and 6 adults.
